Around 1 in 7 people in the UK experience mental health problems in the workplace but it’s still often considered a taboo subject. With that said, more people are starting to speak out about mental health in the workplace and attitudes are beginning to shift.
If you’re an SME business owner or an entrepreneur, your own mental health and wellbeing should be a priority. Starting a business can be a stressful and difficult time, it’s a big step to take and it’s easy to forget about looking after yourself.
Business owners need to develop a good work / life balance. This can be a difficult attitude to adopt, especially in the early stages of a business start-up, but it really is important not to take on too much too soon.
Once you have a balance in place, it can have a positive effect on your business practice. It can make you more confident when communicating, more proactive in decision making and better at forming relationships with peers and customers.
Here are some good tips for self-care which can help improve your mindset:
Read A Book
Reading is a valuable skill which impels you to sit back and wind down. It can also improve your memory skills and focus your mind.
Get Eight Hours Sleep
Getting your eight hours sleep in at night has many benefits, but if this is something that you find hard to achieve, try to go to bed a little earlier at night. Even just resting in bed and not actively doing work will help you wind-down and relieve stress. Try listening to music help you drop off.
Doing 30 minutes of exercises each day is proven to lift your mood, help you to sleep better and is a great stress-reliever.
Spend Time with Family and Friends
Catch up with loved ones. Take time out of your busy day to speak with the people around you. Even if it’s just a ten-minute phone call catch up with a family member or a coffee with a friend, it can have a positive impact on your mood and lift your confidence.
Have A Break
Take a few minutes to just do nothing. No laptops, phones or any other electronic devices. Sit in the garden, sit in the bath, just do nothing.
